Charlie Acker of The Mendocino Beacon

The 33rd annual "Great Day in Elk" will be held on Saturday, August 25th. The parade starts at noon on Highway 1, with floats, tykes on bikes, Smokey the Bear and lots more. A carnival follows, with game booths and prizes and do-it-yourself craft projects for children. Daytime food includes Mexican food, hot dogs, fresh bread baked in the clay oven, Moroccan lentil soup and lots of homemade goodies. There will be fresh-pressed Greenwood Ridge apple cider and Elk's famous margaritas, along with soft drinks and coffee. There's a $100 grease pole, fortune-telling, belly dancing, mini-massage, a watermelon-eating contest, live music, sack races, a cake auction, silent auction and a raffle drawing.

This year's dinner will be an outdoor barbecue from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. featuring tri-tip, salmon or albacore and portabella mushrooms, plus macaroni salad, chili beans, green salad and garlic bread. The salsa sounds of "Mambo This" will round out the day's activities. The dance starts at 8 p.m. with a full bar all evening long. So, put on your dancing shoes and be ready to dance the night away.
