Happily, a host of wonderful inns make the most of the Pacific shoreline's rare settings. The drive north to south along coastal Highway I provides a sampling of the best of both inns and scenery as it changes from soaring cliffs north of San Francisco to gentle strands of beach south of the city, then climbs to dramatic heights again at Big Sur before dipping o the sunny shores and busy marinas of Southern California. Winter months offer a bonus--the chance to spot whales offshore. The Greenwood Pier Inn, atop the bluff just down the road in Elk, is delightfully quirky, a complex of fairy-tale cottages with peaked roofs and skylights, connected by flower-bordered paths surrounded by a profusion of colorful seaside gardens. Artist owners Kendrick and Isabel Petty conceptualized the fanciful architecture and created the extraordinary tile- work and artistic collages inside. Kendrick doubles as head gardener and chef of the small restaurant ...runs the treasure-filled country store and garden shop at the inn's entrance. All the rooms have handmade quilts and handpainted tiles. Breakfast is delivered to your door. The choicest lodgings are in the flower-bedecked three-level Sea Castle on the edge of the cliff, where winding stairs lead up to windowed turrets overlooking the sea-carved stone arches below.
