From the Bay Area, take Highway 10 1 to Cloverdale, west on Highway 128 to Highway One, south 6 miles to inn. Greenwood Pier Inn is 5 miles south of Highway 128 turnoff on Highway One. Elk is approximately three hours driving time from the Golden Gate Bridge.

Situated between Highway One and the sea, the Greenwood Pier Inn was recommended by some folks who raved about its new SeaCastle building overlooking the Pacific. Expecting to find a contemporary establishment, we were surprised to discover a venerable, eclectic collection of still-evolving accommodations, of which SeaCastle represents only the latest chapter.

Innkeepers Kendrick and Isabel Petty have been Elk residents for more than two decades, and their influence is felt throughout the inn. Isabel, in addition to being a talented baker, created the adjacent country store as well as the quilt art that graces the guest rooms. In addition to serving as the inn's resident chef, Kendrick cultivated the colorful grounds and is responsible for the tile and marble work in many of the rooms.

Rooms for Romance

For purposes of this book, we've limited our recommendations to three accommodations The two guest rooms in SeaCastle (mid- to upper-$100 range) are as romantic as you'll find along this part of the north coast Constructed in an unusual Roman/Victorian style, SeaCastle is perched at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean and beautiful rock formations A sitting room occupies the lower floor, just below the sleeping quarters. A spiral staircase leads to the bathroom loft, which features an ocean view and marble tub for two Both SeaCastle rooms have fireplaces.

If SeaCastle is booked, you might consider Cliffhouse, a large, rustic, ocean-view cabin sitting on the edge of a cliff Cliffhouse (mid-$100 range) is paneled in redwood and features a marble fireplace and spa tub for two. There's also a private, ocean-view deck at cliff's edge with lounges and chairs - for the not-so-faint-of-heart.
